KATHMANDU, July 23: The incident in the landless squatters' settlement at Dharahara Murtiya area of Sarlahi district on July 5 has been deemed grave violation of human rights.

A clash had ensued between the landless squatters and policemen leaving 28 squatters injured when they tried to demolish the illegally constructed hut at the area of Sagarnatha Forest Development Project in the district.

A report jointly prepared by a six-member team of Jana Adhikar Abhiyan and Campaign for Human Rights and Social Transformation (CAHURAST) Nepal after the onsite visit and study states that the incident took place due to the biasness of the both political parties- ruling and opposition.

The report unveiled here today has recommended immediate free treatment of the injured, compensation to the damages incurred to the hut, vehicles and crops during the clash and action against those involved in the atrocity and the like.

Janadhikar Abhiyan's Vice-President Dev Bahadur Poudel said that the study showed that the labor of the people residing in the landless squatters' settlements and Project area were exploited and they were not appropriately resettled. RSS
