KATHMANDU, Feb 9: Senior Advocate Rabinarayan Khanal has been elected as a councillor of the Nepal Bar Council (NBC) in Bagmati Province.
A common candidate from the progressive, professional, nationalist, and inclusive group, Khanal was elected as he secured 2,449 votes to defeat his nearest rival, Senior Advocate Parshuram Koirala of the Nepal Democratic Lawyers Association, who got 1,842 votes, according to Senior Advocate Usha Malla Pathak, Chief of the Election Coordination Committee of Bagmati Province.

Similarly, Raju Dhakal was elected the Koshi Province councillor, Sanjeev Kumar Mallik in Madhesh, Dayaram Gautam in Gandaki, Ishwori Prasad Gyawali in Lumbini, Matrika Prasad Khanal in Karnali, and Tek Bahadur Kathayat in Sudurpaschim Province.
Voting was held in all seven provinces on Saturday. The election of councillors to the council was held as per the provisions of the Nepal Bar Council Act, 1993. There are 11,000 voters in the country who elect seven councillors, each representing one of seven provinces.
NBC is an independent legal institution established by the Nepal Bar Council Act, 1993. The main objectives of the Council are to promote, protect, and regulate the activities of law practitioners more professionally.
The attorney general and the president of the Nepal Bar Association are the chair and vice-chair, respectively. The registrar of the Supreme Court and the Dean of Tribhuvan University are ex officio councillors. It consists of seven councillors from seven provinces. The term of office of the councillors will be five years.
