KATHMANDU, Oct 17: The Supreme Court (SC) has held a preliminary hearing on a contempt of court report filed against Nepal Bar Association (NBA) President Gopal Krishna Ghimire. The report was filed after Ghimire claimed that justices were appointed through a corrupt process.

A bench comprising justices Kumar Regmi and Dr Kumar Chudal conducted the hearing on the report submitted by Supreme Court Deputy Registrar Govinda Ghimire. The bench is expected to pass a preliminary order on the matter soon.

The report stems from an accusation made by NBA President Ghimire during an event organized by the Kathmandu District Court Bar Association. Ghimire had criticized outgoing chief justice Bishowambar Prasad Shrestha for allegedly appointing justices through corrupt means, following the Judicial Council’s recommendation of two justices for the Supreme Court.

Deputy Registrar Govinda Ghimire’s report called for action, claiming that the Bar President’s remarks were in contempt of court. The SC has now initiated proceedings to review the case.
