KATHMANDU, Sep 1: In the wake of the exposure of several corruption cases by media, lawmakers have registered a resolution motion in parliament, demanding action against the corrupt and strengthening the anti-corruption bodies.

The motion comes at a time when the government and anti graft bodies seem reluctant to probe and take action against Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) Managing Director Gopal Khadka for his involvement in embezzling millions of rupees. With the delay in taking action against those involved in corruption, Khadka, the prime accused in a multi-million rupees land procurement scam, has sued Nagarik daily, the newspaper which exposed his wrongdoings.

While the state is keeping mum over a billion-rupee misappropriation scam, the lawmakers have demanded clear direction to the anti corruption bodies to control corruption and making the anti-graft bodies powerful and vibrant.

"The Executive, Legislative and the Judiciary have not become free from corruption," reads the proposal, “The anti-graft bodies remain helpless to curb corruption especially those taking place in the political sector due to the lack of power balance and selfish-intent."

Lawmakers Narasingh Chaudhary, Ankal Ahamad Sah, Harkabol Rai, and Anita Kumari Pariyar have seconded the motion.

"A corruption industry is being run by the political leadership and bureaucrats in collusion with handful of clever people and brokers who have national as well as international nexus," reads the motion.

The motion has demanded a bill on 'illicit acts' within 15 days, integrating anti-corruption bodies within two months, strengthening the anti graft constitutional body - the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

The proposal has been submitted demanding action against the corrupt officials in accordance with Rule 108 of Parliament Regulations 2073. Once the resolution motion is passed from parliament after discussion, the government should inform parliament about the demands in the motion immediately. The government minister concerned will also answer parliament about the demands in the resolution after the deliberation.
