KATHMANDU, Aug 16: Nepal Financial Institution Employees´ Union (NFIEU) of Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) on Tuesday picketed the bank CEO´s office on Tuesday, protesting the appointment of Shiva Devi Kafle at the bank´s helm.

The Ministry of Finance had appointed Kafle, who is also a board member of the state-owned bank, on Thursday after the central bank instructed BFIs not to give executive power to chairman of the board of directors. [break]

Ram Prasad Adhikari, chairman of the board of directors, was serving as managing director of the bank before Kafle´s appointment.

Jitendra Singh Thapa, president of the union´s RBB chapter, said they will not accept political appointments at the bank. “RBB is in need of a competitive person,” he said.

Meanwhile, the government is preparing to appoint a new CEO at the bank. It has already formed a committee to recommend the new CEO.

Thapa questioned the government decision of appointing short-tem CEO when acting CEO was already overseeing the bank´s activities.

Officials at the bank told Republica that Kafle had assumed office early Friday morning to avoid employees´ protest. However, the employees barred Kafle from entering the office on Tuesday. More than 250 employees participated in sit-on protest on the day.

“We won´t withdraw our protest unless she agrees to resign,” Thapa said, adding that they would intensify their protest from next week if their demand is ignored.
