The Rasuwagadhi-Kerung road section had remained blocked due to the catastrophic earthquake of magnitude 7.8 on April 25, followed by landslides during the monsoon. Both customs of Nepal and China had remained closed after the earthquake due to obstructions of road caused by the quake.
"We have been able to resume operation after a month long attempts to remove debris along the road," said the Customs Office chief Kedar Paneru.
With its resumption, some good carriers loaded with food items meant for the quake victims entered Nepal through the border on Thursday.
"We are hopeful that trade between the two countries will now flow smoothly within 2-4 days," he added. Crowds of businesspersons had thronged Rasuwagadhi customs on Wednesday even before the customs had resumed. Goods worth more than Rs 100 million are said to be left stranded in Kerung of China for more than 5 months. Nepali entrepreneurs on Thursday headed to Kerung of China to bring them back, according to Mukunda Poudel, secretary of Nepal-China Kerung Trade Association.
"We are very happy to learn about resumption of the border checkpoint," said Poudel. "Goods stranded in Kerung will be brought to Nepal within three days. We have also placed additional order from Gonzaba targeting the festivals."
An unofficial meeting between representatives of the two countries was held on Wednesday, and the resumption of border checkpoint was declared soon after.
