KATHMANDU, Jan 1: Qatar has granted amnesty to 13 Nepalis currently serving prison sentences in the country. The pardon was announced on the occasion of Qatar’s National Day and International Human Rights Day.

Issuing a press statement, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed sincere gratitude to Qatar, saying: “The Government of Nepal extends its sincere gratitude to the Government of the State of Qatar for the Amiri Amnesty generously granted to the 13 Nepali inmates on the happy occasion of the National Day of the State of Qatar and the International Human Rights Day.”
The MoFA further noted that the amnesty, granted on humanitarian grounds, reflects “the manifestation of deepening friendship and cordiality in the existing bilateral relations between Nepal and the State of Qatar.” It added that such a gesture will strengthen mutual trust and cooperation between the two nations. Qatar has not disclosed the duration of sentences or fines waived under the amnesty.
