KATHMANDU, Spet 24: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Tuesday has endorsed the government proposal to remove constitutional difficulties to pave the way for deploying the Nepal Army (NA) during the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

According to a press statement issued by the president’s office today, President Dr Yadav endorsed the ordinance forwarded by the government on Monday to remove constitutional difficulties in deploying the army in the November 19 elections.[break]

A provision in the Interim Constitution bars the deployment of army in the CA election as the parliament approval is required for the deployment of NA for reasons other than natural calamities. As there is no parliament at present, the government sought to amend the statutory provision.

A cabinet meeting on Monday had decided to ask the president to pave the way for army deployment. Though the government earlier this week had suggested to the president to endorse the former´s proposal to deploy the army, the president turned it down saying that a constitutional provision doesn´t allow him to do so.

The political parties and the government decided to deploy the national army after some of the agitating political parties including CPN-Maoist decided to boycott the upcoming election and disrupt poll activities.
