President's Running Shield from today

KATHMANDU: The President"s Running Shield, a national-level tournament for school students featuring athletics and volleyball events, is all set to begin in Kathmandu from Wednesday.



After completing the district and regional selection tournaments on Tuesday, National Sports Council is hosting the tournament in Kathmandu under the initiative of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. According to National Sports Council, altogether 205 young athletes will vie for 25 gold medals in athletics and for two gold medals (boys" and girls") in volleyball during the tournament. Home Minister Madhav Prasad Ghimire will inaugurate the three-day tournament on Wednesday morning. [break]



Meanwhile, Kathmandu district became the champion of the Central Region selection tournament. Kathmandu accumulated 209 points as it clinched both the boys" and girls" volleyball titles. Kathmandu defeated Chitwan 25-13, 25-21, 25-27, 25-19 in the boys" section while it edged past Lalitpur 25-6, 25-11, 25-6 in the girls" final. Chitwan finished second overall with a total of 157 points while Nuwakot secured the third position with 52 points.
