President's Election: Filing of nomination papers today

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Candidates vying for the post of the next President would be filing their nomination papers today. The election is scheduled to be held on March 9.


Nomination papers for candidates for the post of the President can be registered at the Office of the Election Officer at the federal parliament building premises in Naya Baneshwor from 10 am to 3 pm today, said Assistant Election Officer Amrita Kumari Sharma.

As per the legal provision a candidate standing for the post of the President will require five MPs who should propose and five others to second the candidacy. The voting for the election of the Head of the State will take place from 10 am to 3 pm on March 9.


The President is elected by the Electoral College comprising members of the Federal Parliament (House of Representatives and the National Assembly) and the Provincial Assembly. The total number of voters for the election of the President is 882, consisting of 332 members of the federal parliament and 550 members of the provincial assemblies of the seven provinces. The vote weightage of the federal MP is 79 and of the provincial assembly member is 48.


A person who is a member of the federal parliament, who has completed 45 years of age and is not disqualified by any law can become a candidate for the post of the President. The term of office of the President shall be five years from the date of election and a person can be elected for the post of the President only for two terms.


Separate polling centers have been set up for the members of the federal parliament and the members of the provincial assembly in the Parliament building complex at Baneshwar. "After completing all due election procedures, voting will be held on March 9 from 10 am to 3 pm and preparations have been made to announce the vote results by 7:00 pm on the same day," said Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.
