KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Following the rapid increment in the incidents of murder, theft, robbery, pick pocketing, hooliganism and other unlawful activities in the Valley in the last few weeks, the police has arrested about 711 people from different places in Kathmandu and maintained their records on Monday.

According to SSP Rana Bahadur Chand, the chief of Metropolitan Police Range Office Kathamandu, the Valley has seen some serious crimes in recent times, so we launched a combing drive to identify hooligans and suspects in different crime prone areas in the valley.[break]

Those areas include the places that lie in the periphery of Ring Road as well as inner city areas such as Maharajgunj, Bouddha, Baneshwar, Kalimati, Balaju, Swayambhu, Kamal Pokhari, Kapan, Budanilkantha, Tokha, Sankhu, Gongabu, Singhadurbar, Gaushala, among others.

The police held 105 people from Balaju, the highest number of arrests from a particular area.

The operation was carried out during between 11 am and 3 pm. People were arrested on the basis of unnecessary gathering and grouping, rough dressing and hair style, ear rings and tattoo on the body.

“We searched taverns, snooker houses, solitary places near temples and monuments, jungles and other spots where drug abusers gather,” SSP Chand said.

The police has recorded their name, address, contact details, physical appearance, finger prints, photographs and other identity details for future reference.

“We kept the records of those arrested, gave counseling to those who needed it and then handed them over to their kin and parents. They have been warned not to repeat prohibited activities again,” said DSP Somnath Bastola, head at Metropolitan Police Circle Office, Balaju.

Meanwhile, the police has detained those they suspect were involved in unlawful activities recently for further investigation.

SSP Chand said that the police will continue the campaign to bring down the incidents of crime in the Valley.

“The campaign is what we call proactive policing. It has worried the wrong doers but brought excitement among Kathmanduties,” he claimed.
