Police-inmates clash at Bhaktapur correction center: 17 inmates still absconding

BHAKTAPUR, Aug 22: A total of 221 inmates managed to escape from the correction center located in Sanothimi, Madhyapur Thimi Municipality 2, Bhaktapur on Monday. According to the police, efforts to search for 17 persons are still going on.

BHAKTAPUR, Aug 22: A total of 221 inmates managed to escape from the correction center located in Sanothimi, Madhyapur Thimi Municipality 2, Bhaktapur on Monday. According to the police, efforts to search for 17 persons are still going on.


Among the fugitives, 194 people were arrested by Monday evening. Additional 10 inmates were arrested during the night. Superintendent of Police (SP) Prajit KC of District Police Range, Bhaktapur, said that the search for them is continuing.

Kamal Basnet, 18, of Manthali Municipality-3, Kathjor, who was living as an inmate at the correction center, died mysteriously on Sunday. After fainting, he was taken to the hospital and died during treatment. His demise prompted accusations of negligence against the correction center staff, with relatives protesting outside the correction center and raising voices against the perceived shortcomings. Concurrently, inmates within the center voiced their grievances through chants and slogans.


The situation took a violent turn when the inmates emerged from the correction center's gates and confronted the police, compelling them to employ gunfire as a means of control. The inmates launched an attack against police personnel.


According to the police, a total of 29 people were injured in the clash, 19 on the side of the police and 10 on the side of the children. They are being treated in different hospitals.


According to the District  Police Range, Bhaktapur two people injured by the police are being treated at Nagarik Hospital, two at Bhaktapur Hospital, two at Bhaktapur International Hospital, five at Madhyapur Hospital, and eight at Nagarik Hospital of Armed Police Force. Similarly, the District Police Range, Bhaktapur said that a total of 10 children are being treated in the Nagarik Hospital and three in the trauma center.
