BHAKTAPUR, Aug 21: A shooting incident occurred as inmates within a correction center in Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-2, Sanothimi, Bhaktapur, engaged in a confrontation with the police on Monday, resulting in injuries sustained by both parties.
As tensions escalated, the inmates launched an attack against police personnel and attempted to force their way out by breaking down the center's doors. In response, the police resorted to opening fire. The ensuing clash left at least three inmates and several police personnel injured.

While one of the injured inmates is reportedly in critical condition, the conditions of the two other inmates are said to be stable. The injured parties are currently receiving medical treatment at Nagarik Hospital.
The incident on Monday follows the death of 18-year-old Kamal Basnet of Manthali Municipality-3, Kathjor in Ramechhap on Sunday. He was serving his sentence in the correction center on charges of rape. His demise prompted accusations of negligence against the correction center staff, with relatives protesting outside the correction center and raising voices against the perceived shortcomings. Concurrently, inmates within the center voiced their grievances through chants and slogans.
The situation took a violent turn when the inmates emerged from the correction center's gates and confronted the police, compelling them to employ gunfire as a means of control. The inmates chased the police till SOS School. Consequently, all male inmates of the correction center managed to escape.
Armed Police Force (APF) personnel have been deployed to ensure security at the correction center. The female inmates remain within the center, while approximately 84 escaped prisoners have been arrested by the police and are currently held in custody pending further action.
