KATHMANDU, Aug 3: A group of 25 children aged 14 to 18, from Youth and Voice Nepal, participated in a 7-week-long workshop led by Apekshya Prasai, a student at Bowdoin College in the US. The youth empowerment workshop, Pariwartan, was conducted in collaboration with Child Development Society, YES! Club world- Nepal of the Art of Living, Artudio, View Your Choice and Sarwanam Theater with the objective of empowering the participants who are victims of child rights violation.

Through Pariwartan, a series of workshops on social media and visual art were organized for the benefit of the participants. The participants learnt the importance of using social media to further their cause of child rights and have started a blog and a Facebook page for their organization. They also had instructions about art, professional theater and photography. 12 of the participants presented ‘Aaina’, a play depicting the evils of child labor and child rights violation, on Saturday at Sarwanam Theater in Kalikasthan. Making use of music, photographs and lighting to play up the somber mood of the story, the actors managed to draw the audience into the core of the story. ‘Aaina’ starts with three people being questioned by the police and the story of child laborers, child abuse and rape is opened up to the audience. The play was the culmination of the efforts of the actors, Apeskhya Prasai, Child Development Society and Sarwanam Theater. Apekshya stated that the objective of the workshop was to empower the participants. “The audience may have their own perception of the play, but its major objective is to make sure that these children are empowered,” she said.

The participants of Pariwartan also showcased their paintings in an exhibition after the play. While the play was just a one-time performance, the exhibition will be held for a week, excluding Monday. The exhibition brings to life the theme of child rights violation, and will be open from 11 am to 4 pm at Sarwanam Theater.
