Nepal's first female ambassador Bhinda Swari Shah passes away

Nepal's first female ambassador, Bhinda Swari Shah, has passed away. Former Foreign Secretary Madan Bhattarai confirmed her death.

KATHMANDU, Jan 2: Nepal's first female ambassador, Bhinda Swari Shah, has passed away at her residence in Kalimati, Kathmandu. Former Foreign Secretary Madan Bhattarai confirmed her death.


She was appointed Nepal’s ambassador to India in 1988, becoming the country’s first female ambassador.

Shah's appointment marked a significant milestone in Nepal's diplomatic history, setting an example for women's leadership in the country's foreign service. She served with distinction and contributed to strengthening Nepal's international relations during her tenure.


She was also the first female joint secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a diplomat, she also served in Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Washington DC. 


Born on February 13, 1933, she was the mother of celebrity banker Anil Keshari Shah who joined Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in June, 2023.
