Nepal’s first female judge, Sharada Shrestha, passes away

Shrestha became the first district court judge in 1967 when she was appointed in Land Reform Special Court and the second female justice to be appointed to the Supreme Court. She became a Supreme Court Justice on April 15, 2004 and retired on June 2, 2009.

KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Nepal's first female judge, Sharada Shrestha, has passed away at the Nepal Police Hospital Maharajgunj on Friday morning. She passed away at the age of 84.


Shrestha became the first district court judge in 1967 when she was appointed in Land Reform Special Court and the second female justice to be appointed to the Supreme Court. She became a Supreme Court Justice on April 15, 2004 and retired on June 2, 2009.

She had been ill and was undergoing treatment at the Police Hospital for a few days. After her health improved after receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), she was shifted to the ward.  According to the family sources, the funeral will be held at Pashupati Aryaghat in the evening.
