KATHMANDU, April 28: A Traceability System has been implemented in Nepali Orthodox tea from today. Accordingly, the tea products on sale now must have a barcode attached that provides the customers all the necessary information about the product.

Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr Beduram Bhusal and Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Ramesh Rijal launched the system at a program held here on Thursday.

On the occasion, Minister Bhusal said that tea production can contribute to the national economy as Nepal exported around 13,000 metric tons of tea to third world countries including India.

Likewise, Minister Rijal expressed the view that tea exports to the international market will reduce the growing trade deficit and bring economic transformation to the farmers.

Meanwhile, the National Tea and Coffee Development Board has been organizing various programs for tea promotion for three days starting Thursday in connection with the 27th National Tea Day.

The Tea Entrepreneur Award was presented to tea farmers Pandav Timilsina, Usha Subba and Dil Kumar Rai on the occasion on Thursday. The award carries a purse of  Rs 150,000.
