KATHMANDU, Feb 20: Nepal is set to face Syria today in its inaugural match at the West Asian Football Federation (WAFF) Women's Championship 2024, hosted in Saudi Arabia. The Group B clash between Nepal and Syria is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 PM Nepali time at the King Abdullah Sports City Ground in Jeddah.
This marks Nepal's first participation in the competition, which features countries from the Western region. The 23-member Nepali squad, led by captain and goalkeeper Anjila Tumbapo Subba, has already reached Saudi Arabia for the tournament. The team includes forward Sabitra Bhandari, who has gained international experience playing in the French League and joined the team directly from France for this championship.

In addition to Sabitra, the Nepali team boasts six players, including Captain Anjila, who have been competing in the Indian league. These players have taken a break from their league commitments to represent their national team in this prestigious tournament.
The tournament will also see participation from the host country Saudi Arabia, previous champions Jordan, and other teams including Guam, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria, promising an exciting and competitive championship.
