Nepal spent Rs 15.18 billion on import of mobile phones in current FY

The records with the Department of Customs show that the country imported smartphones worth Rs 13.59 billion during mid-July and mid-December of the FY 2023/24.

KATHMANDU, Dec 23: Nepal imported mobile phones worth more than Rs 15.18 billion in the first five months of the current fiscal year, which was 11.69 percent more than the amount the country spent on the items during the same period of the last FY.


The records with the Department of Customs show that the country imported smartphones worth Rs 13.59 billion during mid-July and mid-December of the FY 2023/24.

In the review period, the number of imported smartphones increased to 990,754 units from 902,981 units. The government collected customs revenue of Rs 2.83 billion from the transaction during the review period this year.


China topped the list of import sources of mobile phones. Nepal imported 747,564 units of mobile phones worth Rs 10.35 billion from the northern neighbor. Likewise, a total of 239,878 units of mobile phones worth Rs 4.59 billion were imported from India.
