KATHMANDU, July 31: Nepal Police's high-ranking officials have launched an investigation into Additional Inspector General (AIG) Shyam Gyawali, accusing him of exacerbating political tensions and misusing his position by breaking the chain of command during his tenure in the police administration.
The investigation aims to potentially replace Gyawali, who was working with the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, with another individual.
Did IGP Kunwar breach jurisdiction or AIG Gyawali defied leader...
AIG Gyawali responded to the investigation by saying, "It is a well-planned media attack on me, and there is no tainted intention from the police headquarters."
Sources at the Police Headquarters reported that a dozen anonymous complaints were filed against Gyawali at the IGP's secretariat.
The investigation, led by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Tek Prasad Rai, concerns allegations of abuse of position by AIG Gyawali. Following a report from the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority on gold smuggling, the then Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane removed AIG Kiran Bajracharya, who had successfully investigated the case, and appointed Gyawali to the position.
Bajracharya's removal and subsequent disciplinary action were met with widespread criticism. Although Gyawali’s investigation was unrelated to the gold smuggling case, he faces allegations of violating the chain of command, mishandling investigations, and engaging in irregular dealings related to the Century Bank loan scandal.
"The investigation into his case was initiated because the Police Headquarters needs to submit a report on the complaint to the Ministry of Home Affairs promptly," an officer at the Police Headquarters stated. The officer also mentioned allegations that Gyawali had met with political party leaders, though details about these meetings remain undisclosed.
