Nepal makes title hat-trick

KATHMANDU, May 20: Nepal became the team champion for the third consecutive time in the International Karate Championship under way in Kathmandu. Nepal bagged 28 gold and 30 bronze and silver medals each.



India finished second with five golds, three silvers and a bronze. Nepali players -- Ritesh Shrestha in men´s section and Dipa Lama in women´s section -- were declared the best players.[break]



Sunil Thapa Magar bagged gold in men´s 55 kg defeating Minesh Khatri in an encounter between Nepali players. Raju Magrati secured first position in 60 kg beating Man Bahadur Bhurtel. Both of them are from Nepal.



In 65 kg section, Dhangjit Lama clinched gold defeating Ram Bahadur Maji in all Nepal final. Ritesh Shrestha of Nepal took home gold in the open weight category defeating Uttam Shrestha of same country in the final.



In women´s kumite, 9-10 year age category, Nepal´s Elisha Shrestha and Tanu Rai clinched gold and silver respectively. In 15-16 year age category, Anjana Nepali of Nepal defeated Melina Pariyar of the same country for gold.



Deepa Vitrakoti took home gold in U-12 section defeating Deepa Nepal in the final. Both of the finalists are from Nepal.



India lifted gold in men´s 25 kg, 30 kg, 35 kg, 40 kg and 45 kg category. Aniket Jawalkar was the winner in 25 kg, Kiran Yadav in 30 kg, Dipanshu Bariya in 35 kg, Dipak Sharma in 40 kg and Rohit Tiwari in 45 kg.



Former minister Rajendra Pandey, SSP Nawaraj Silwal among other distributed prizes to the winners. The two-day championship featured 200 players, including 182 from host Nepal and 18 from India.
