Thapa completes title hattrick in squash

KATHMANDU, Aug 21: Hira Bahadur Thapa continued his dominance in Nepali squash as he completed a hat-trick of titles in the Third NSRA Open Squash Championship on Sunday. Thapa won the final of men´s singles for his third title in the championship.



Thapa defeated Suresh Gurung in three straight sets in the final match played at the Satdobato Squash Academy, Lalitpur. Thapa struggled to take the first set 13-11 but dominated the other two sets 11-4, 11-9 to take the game in his favor.[break]



Earlier, Thapa´s daughter Krishna had bagged the women´s singles title on Saturday. She remained undefeated in the round robin league participated by five female players.



Shera Tamang, who had lost to Thapa, finished second in the category.



Likewise, Manoj Bahadur Shrestha lifted the title in the veterans´ singles category of above 40 age group. Shrestha beat Rajendra Bhakta Shrestha in four sets. After conceding the first set 8-11, Manoj bounced back to win the other three 11-5, 11-9, 11-8 respectively.



In the final of men´s singles plate championship, Gaurav Katuwal registered victory over Bhushan Krishna Shrestha in three straight sets. The plate championship featured players who failed to reach the quarterfinals in men´s singles and veterans´ singles. Katuwal took the first two sets with identical scores of 11-4, but struggled in the third set.



Shrestha gave Katuwal a tough fight in the third set but could not stop him from winning it 13-11.



During the prize distribution ceremony, National Sports Council Member Secretary Yuvraj Lama praised Nepal Squash and Rackets Association for its unity and urged them to focus on producing junior players.



Altogether 23 players had participated in the men´s singles, while the veterans´ category featured 16 players.



Lama, Awal win gold medals



Sunita Lama and Piyush Awal won gold medals in the Sixth Hareram Joshi Memorial Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday.



Lama of Prime School beat Apekchya Shakya from Dharan in the final of girls´ singles played at the National Table Tennis Training Center, Kathmandu.[break]



Lama took the first two sets 11-6, 11-7 but lost the third set 9-11. Lama bounced back in the fourth set to win it 11-8.



Nitija Thapa from Kathmandu and Goma Gautam from Dhanusha finished third.



Likewise, Awal of Guinness International School defeated Nihal Shrestha of Prime School in the boys´ singles final. Awal won the first set 11-9 but lost the second 8-11. He then staged a comeback to win the third and fourth sets 11-9, 11-7.



In the U-14 boys´ singles, Anuj Adhikari of Siddhartha Vanasthali and Rabin Sadh set up a final showdown. Adhikari defeated Tendi Sherpa of Bijeshwari while Sadh beat Kiran Suwal of Bidya Bikash in the semifinals.


Navajyoti, Satdobato register wins



Navajyoti Youth Club and Satdobato Youth Club won their respective matches on Sunday in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull C Division League Football Tournament at the Chyasal Ground, Lalitpur.



Navajyoti beat Garuda Sports Club 3-1 with a brace from Amit Sunuwar and a goal from Bibek Gurung. Dinesh Pun scored the consolation goal for Garuda.



Similarly, a hat-trick from Sabin KC helped Satdobato Youth beat Khalibari Football Club 7-0. Dhiraj Tamang scored two goals for the winning team while Jyoti Khadka and Prasanna Thapa added a goal each.
