Nepal loses to Uzbekistan 4-2 on penalties, fails to qualify for Women's Asia Cup

KATHMANDU, July 5: Nepal's dream of qualifying for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026 has ended in heartbreak following a dramatic penalty shootout loss to hosts Uzbekistan.


In a thrilling final match held Saturday night, the Nepali national women’s football team lost 4-2 in the penalty shootout after the regulation 90 minutes ended in a 3-3 draw.

Nepal had entered the match under pressure, conceding two early goals within the first 11 minutes. Although captain Sabitra Bhandari ‘Samba’ gave Nepal a lifeline with a goal in the 24th minute, Uzbekistan restored their two-goal advantage by scoring again in the 39th minute to lead 3-1 at halftime.


Toward the end of the first half, Uzbekistan was reduced to 10 players, a turning point that Nepal capitalized on. With relentless attacking play in the second half, Sabitra Bhandari completed a stunning hat-trick by scoring in the 71st and 73rd minutes, pulling Nepal level at 3-3 and igniting hope among supporters.


The match, however, went to penalties after no further goals were scored in regulation time. In the shootout, Nepal fell short, converting only two of their spot kicks, while Uzbekistan scored four to seal their place in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
