DANG, Nov 2: The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project in Lamahi has initiated a scientific study and master plan to ensure sustainable river management in the Deukhuri Valley and surrounding areas.
The study aims to reduce flood risks and support the sustainable design of infrastructure, considering changes in land use across the West Rapti River basin, rising global temperatures and the effects of climate change on river flows.
Sustainable Tourism Challenges
According to information officer Khumananda Wali, a study covering a 42 kilometre stretch of the West Rapti River up to the Satbariya area was completed in the last fiscal year, 2082/83. The study identified the river's flow corridor.
Wali said the findings would help manage water shortages during the dry season and floods during the monsoon after the construction of the Naumure Dam.
He said the study would also help standardise the design of river control works, bridges and other hydraulic structures, ensuring that future infrastructure is sustainable and climate resilient.
A web-based asset management system has also been developed to protect existing river control structures and ensure greater transparency and systematic planning for future projects.
The system will maintain digital records of existing structures, their benefits to local communities, additional infrastructure requirements, estimated costs and expected returns. These records will be used to prepare a dynamic master plan for river management.
