NC´s position came during a meeting with a delegation of Judges´ Society Nepal (JSN) on Friday. Law professionals oppose the proposed structure of the judiciary in the new constitution saying there was enough room for politicial interference and would undermine the independence of judiciary.[break]
JSN members quoted NC President Sushil Koirala as saying that the party´s approval of the proposal was a mistake and assured necessary measures to correct it.
JSN wrapped up its month long drive against the proposed judicial structure in the new constitution demanding scrapping of four major provisions - - formation of Constitutional Court, Judiciary Commission, re-appointment of judges and the mandatory two-years term for chief justice.
JSN maintains that a centralized structure like constitutional Court would lead to jurisdiction disputes in the federal structure. It says a special bench under the Supreme Court could deal with constitutional issues.
On Friday a JSN delegation led by its vice-chairman and Supreme Court judge Ram Kumar Shah handed over a memorandum to NC and joint Madeshi Alliance.
“We have effectively drawn the attention of major political parties on our stand to make the judiciary independent," said Satyaraj Gurung, SCN general-secretary. Earlier, JSN delegation also met with UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpakamal Dahal, CPN (UML) chairman Jhalnath Khanal and Constituent Assembly Chairman Subash Nemwang.
