NC leader Koirala accuses govt of trying to curtail press freedom by drafting draconian media laws

KATHMANDU, June 3: Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has accused the Oli-led government of trying to curtail the press freedom by drafting draconian media laws.

KATHMANDU, June 3: Nepali Congress leader Shekhar Koirala has accused the Oli-led government of trying to curtail the press freedom by drafting draconian media laws.


In a press statement on Monday, the NC leader said that the proposed media laws are against the spirit of the Constitution and National Media Policy-2016.

"The government's forceful attempt to pass the draconian media laws is totally against the spirit of the Constitution and universal principles on freedom of speech and expression," he said in the press statement.  


Koirala claimed that the government tabled the media laws without holding enough consultations with the concerned stakeholders. "This is clearly a manifestation of the autocratic regime," he said in the statement.


Koirala, who is also the central committee member of the party, also appealed the people those who want the freedom to strongly oppose such 'autocratic moves' of the government.
