The United Nations has decided to celebrate this day on May 3 since 1993 in commemoration of the release of the 'Windhoek Declaration for the Development of a Free, Independent and Pluralistic Press’ by a conference of journalists held in the city of Windhoek, Namibia, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The significance of this day lies in promoting access to information and creating a safe environment for journalists to fulfill their duties. The day focuses on the importance of truth dissemination and upholding press freedom. As part of the celebrations, a conference is being held in Santiago, Chile, convened by UNESCO.
