KATHMANDU, April 25: After months long protests, Naya Shakti Nepal (NSN) received Mashal (torch) as the party's election symbol for the upcoming local elections.
The Election Commission (EC) provided torch as the common election symbol to the party after the latter made an electoral working alliance with Upendra Yadav-led Federal Social Forum Nepal.
As per the request of both parties that they will participate in the election with a common symbol, the EC provided torch as the party's election symbol.
The election body does not provide election symbols to the parties other than those represented in parliament. Citing the Act related to Political Parties, the EC has been refusing to provide election symbols to parties outside parliament. Candidates of the parties other than those represented in parliament have to contest the elections as independent candidates.
Altogether 113 parties are registered with the EC. Of them, only 27 are represented in parliament.
