Keeping one's mouth clean and free of disease is important. Maintaining dental hygiene prevents us from bad breath, dental cavity, and other several oral diseases. There are several myths associated with oral hygiene. And My City team interacted with dentist Priyanka Agrawal to debunk myths related to dental hygiene. Some of them are described below:
Cleaning teeth will promote sensitivity
Generally, people don’t visit dentist until and unless there is some serious dental problem. Then, dental calculus deposited over years are removed in just 30 to 45 minutes that creates a gap between teeth and gums which takes around 7 days to heal. During these seven days, patient might feel sensitivity but it is not permanent.
Beware of myths
You should brush your teeth with force
We might feel the need to brush our teeth forcefully to clean thoroughly. But doing so only leads to damaging both teeth and gums badly, not cleaned. However, for maintaining dental hygiene, you should brush your teeth with quality brush and floss them properly including tongue.
Tooth decay in a child should not be treated
When it comes to teeth, people hardly care about children’s teeth. However, they are prone to cavity due to consumption of sugary foods. And, if children’s cavity is not treated on time, their second set of teeth might grow in unusual shapes.
Wisdom tooth removal will have side effects
Many people think that wisdom tooth removal will have its side effects like memory loss, sight loss, etc. “Prior to removal of wisdom tooth, there is a procedure of examining infected tooth. So, there is no need to worry about wisdom tooth removal,” said Agrawal.
General health condition should not be disclosed to dentist
It seems as if teeth are not connected to our circulatory system, but it has direct connection to it. So, it’s very important to explain all medical condition to a dentist before starting any treatment. Any medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension would create complication in healing after a dental surgery.
