Students´ numbers have increased after they got an opportunity to study in their mother tongues. At least 10 schools have launched the multi-lingual teaching after an organization, Environment Education in Society, assisted them to launch the system aiming at preserving the local mother tongues and cultures. Headmasters of the schools say the number of regular school-goers has increased of late with the beginning of the multi- lingual teaching. Gorkha Bahadur Basnet, headmaster of Ratri Primary School, Jitpur, said students´ capacity has increased and they were interested in completing their homework as well.
He said a large number of children from the Tharu community remained absent when the classes were conducted only in the Nepali language. He added that there is no such problem any more.
Labaru Chaudhary, program coordinator of the organization, said students are provided with school building, furniture, drinking water, toilets and first aid services under the campaign.
He said the system will be implemented in five more schools from the next academic session.
