Government Spokesperson Gangalal Tuladhar, making public the decision of the cabinet, said that the meeting has agreed to authorize MoYS to make preparations for the 2014 SAG.[break]
Earlier, in 2010 the MoYS had formed a taskforce to study the possibility of organizing the SAG in the country.
Likewise, Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) had also formed a nine-member committee on August 29, 2010 under the leadership of former NOC General Secretary Bishnu Gopal Shrestha and submitted its report to MoYS.
The Shrestha-led committee in its report had stressed the need for infrastructure development. The panel had suggested building a new stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000 in Khumaltar, Lalitpur. Currently, the Dasharath Stadium is the only international standard stadium and has a capacity to accommodate 18,000 people.
The committee had also urged the government to build five covered halls -- one each in Kirtipur, Bhaktapur, Birgunj, Pokhara and Dharan. It had also asked the government to build multi-purpose halls in Birgunj, Pokhara and Bhaktapur with a seating capacity of 5,000 each.
The panel estimated that 550 ropanis (1 ropani = 5476 sq feet) of land and Rs 1.76 billion would be required for the purpose.
The panel had also recommended introducing South Asian Para Games during the South Asian Games.
Earlier, Nepal had hosted the first and eighth editions of the regional sporting event in 1984 and 1999, respectively. India is scheduled to host the 12th SAG in 2012.
