During the meeting at the prime minister´s official residence at Baluwatar, top leaders apprised Chairman Regmi of the talks held with the poll-opposing CPN-Maoist led alliance.
Chairman Regmi was specially urged to ensure a legal ground for the implementation of the agreement on having 601 members as in the previous CA. The Election Commission is facing difficulty to initiate the works of publishing voters´ education materials and ballot papers.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, CPN-UML leader Agni Kharel said the HLPC informed Chairman Regmi about the discussions held with the Baidya-led alliance in a flexible atmosphere. We are hopeful that Chairman Regmi would initiate a process for removing legal hurdles for implementing the agreement on the 601—member CA reached with the alliances led by Upendra Yadav and Ashok Rai.
It may be noted that the Monday´s talks became unsuccessful after the HLPC declined to implement a proposal about the government change and postponement of the election date as demanded by the alliance. However, the HLPC was learnt to be ready to address other demands put forth by the CPN-Maoist led alliance including minor change of election date by a few days.
There is no meaning to continue talks with the opposing parties if they are not ready to accept the election on the announced date, said Kharel, adding if the party agrees to join the election, we can resume talks for consensus.
