KATHMANDU, Nov 28: A  most wanted Bangladeshi criminal who escaped from the Jhumka jail few weeks ago, has been arrested in Kolkata, India.

According to The Times of India, Subrata Bayen has been arrested from a hideout in Bowbazar by the Special Task Force (STF). He is the main accused in the grenade attack on an Awami League rally in Dhaka in 2004, where 24 people died. [break]

Bayen, who entered the underworld as a teenager is one of the most dreaded names in Bangladesh. The Interpol had issued a red corner notice for him. Police have also recovered arms and ammunition and fake Indian currency of Rs 1.1 million from him.

On November 9, 12 inmates including Bayen had escaped from Jhumka jail by digging an 80-feet tunnel.

According to TOI, in 2008, STF arrested Bayen from Karaya, central Kolkata, but he was released after a few months and fled to Nepal.  An STF team followed him there and nabbed him but they were all detained by the Nepal authorities for ´intrusion´.

The STF officers were released but Bayen was locked up in Sunsari jail in Nepal. Sources say he was trying to flee to Europe or Canada where several other gangsters are already hiding. Bayen was probably betrayed by his contact man, said a source.

Earlier, a high-level committee formed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) to probe into Jhumka jailbreak had found prison staffers and police equally guilty.

A probe committee formed by the Nepal police to investigate the Jhumka jail break has recommended a 10-year jail term for Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Jit Bahadur KC and a six-month jail term each for 17 other policemen, including inspector Ishwor Subedi.

In its report submitted to the Eastern Regional Police Office, the committee led by SSP Ramesh Phuyal, chief of the Koshi Zonal Police Office, recommended jail terms for only 18 of the total 46 policemen deployed for the jail´s security when 12 inmates, including Bangladeshi and Indian nationals, escaped the prison by digging an 80-feet tunnel early this month.

The Phuyal committee, which has recommended departmental actions against 21 policemen, has acquitted only seven policemen, including two women, out of the total 46.
