KATHMANDU, May 25: The monsoon is likely to arrive in Nepal a few days earlier this year than the average date of June 13.
Min Kumar Aryal, Senior Divisional Meteorologist at Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) said that preliminary studies so far indicate the possibility of an early monsoon onset.
However, since the monsoon has already entered India’s Kerala six days earlier than the average date of May 30—arriving instead on May 24, it is likely that Nepal will also experience an early onset of the monsoon.

In a bulletin issued on Sunday, the MFD stated that the monsoon has reached some parts of northwestern and most parts of southwestern Bay of Bengal, as well as areas around Kerala in India, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka. The monsoon is gradually advancing from the Bay of Bengal toward the landmass.
The average date for the monsoon to enter Nepal is June 13. However, it rarely arrives exactly on that date—usually coming a few days earlier or later.
This year, signs suggest that the monsoon may arrive a few days earlier than the average date. However, meteorologist Aryal said it is still too early to confirm this with certainty.
Last year as well, the monsoon entered Nepal three days ahead of schedule, on June 10. The onset of the monsoon marks the official beginning of the rainy season. At present, Nepal is experiencing the pre-monsoon period, which ends once the monsoon officially begins.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) has projected that this monsoon season will bring above-average rainfall and higher temperatures.
