KATHMANDU, April 5: Nepal Media Society has expressed its serious concern over the government's latest decisions saying that the authorities were trying to suppress the mainstream media by imposing one stringent condition after another.
The Society in its statement issued on Thursday has accused the government of "trying to finish the mainstream media" by forcing the media houses to increase the salaries of journalists working in the organizations by 25 percent.

The Society in its statement issued by its chairman Shubhashankar Kandel has accused the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Department of Information of setting various restrictions on issuing Press Pass to journalists.
It has asked the government to correct the provisions that are against press freedom and aimed at muzzling the voice of independent media.
It has also urged various media organizations and democratic political parties to keep vigil on the impending threats to the independent media and press freedom.
The Society has also said that the country's mainstream media have been constantly in the authorities' target ever since the present government was formed a year ago.
“We have a dozen of instances of the government trying to suppress the mainstream media right from the time the present government got its full shape,” reads the statement.
