The competition was a joint initiative of UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF and UN Women and was announced on the eve of International Women’s Day. With the theme of ‘Gender Equality in Nepal’, the videos had to be within a timeframe of one to four minutes and could be in any language spoken within Nepal.
The second prize went to Navin Lamsal for his video ‘Difference Between Dad and Mom’ while Ambika Shrestha Karmacharya’s ‘Paper Boat’ won the third prize.
The competition saw over 90 submissions, touching upon various topics, like ‘discrimination a girl child faces in her home’ and ‘long running gender stereotypes’. The organizers chose 78 videos from the total submissions which were then posted in social media and open for votes. The top three videos were chosen on the basis of the social media votes as well as the decision of a jury keeping in mind the theme, creativity, cinematography, soundtrack, etc.

The winners will receive cash prizes and certificates to mark their efforts. The first prize is Rs 200,000 while the second and third prizes are Rs 150,000 and Rs 100,000 respectively.
With the competition, the organizers wanted to celebrate International Women’s Day and raise awareness about troubles of women and girls among the youth.
“I’m extremely impressed by the quality of the videos submitted. They successfully use imagination and creativity to challenge gender stereotypes. This really demonstrates the creative potential of Nepali youth and how they could be mobilized to bring about social and behavioral change,” Jamie McGoldrick, UN Resident Coordinator.
