Lig-Lige Race on Oct 9

KATHMANDU, Sept 23: The fourth edition of Lig-Lige Daud (Lig-Lige race) will be held on October 9, the organizers announced at a press conference in the capital on Monday.

The 13.5-km race will begin from Chepeghat of Gorkha and will end at the historic Lig-Lig Kot Palace in the district.



The race will feature competitions in men´s and women´s categories, informed Anil Thapa Magar, the president of Lig-Lig Kot Development Expedition and coordinator of the race.[break]



The Lig-Lige Race was started in 1604 BS in Lig-Lig Kot ruled by the Ghale Magar kings. The race was held every year and the winner was crowned the king. But the race stopped after Dravya Shah won the race in 1616 BS and became the king of Gorkha.



"Though the purpose of organizing the race was different in the past, we have been organizing the event to develop the place as a tourist destination and contribute to the development of sports and players," said Thapa Magar, adding that they started the race as an annual event in 2067 BS after the fall of the Shah Dynasty in Nepal.



The organizers have expected participation of about 500 runners, including national level athletes, in the event. Athletics coach Lila Shrestha is the race coordinator. The event carries a total cash prize of Rs 135,000. The top three finishers of men´s race -- the main category -- will receive Rs 50,505, Rs 25,205 and Rs 15,101 respectively. Similarly, the top three finishers of women´s section will get Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. According to the organizers, the fourth and fifth place finishers of both sections will get consolation prizes.



The top three finishers among the locals of Lig-Lig will also be awarded. The top three men runners will bag Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Similarly, the top three women runners will get Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000
