Rimal clocked 1 hour 1 minute to complete the 13-kilometer race from Chepeghat -- the confluence of Marshyangdi and Chepe rivers - to Liglig to finish first out of 56 athletes.[break]
Ligligkot Development Committee and Concept Nepal organized the second edition of the race on Sunday with a view to promote the historical site through sports and also to commemorate the tradition.
Tradition has it that the winner of the race was crowned the king of Liglig for a year before the unification of Nepal by King Prithvi Narayan Shah.
"The race is organized with a view to commemorate the tradition of choosing king with the slogan -- A tribute run for history," read a statement issued by the organizers.
Rimal´s club-mate Hom Lal Shrestha, who had won the 5-km race during the 5th Kathmandu Real Marathon recently, finished in the second position. Shrestha finished the race in 1 hour 1 minute 13 seconds.
Defending champion Bhumi Raj Rai of Nepal Police Club finished third with a timing of 1 hour 1 minute 26 seconds.
The winner bagged Rs 50,000 while the runner-up and third position holder received Rs 25,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Man Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Army and Kiran Malla of Armed Police Force finished in the fourth and fifth positions. Thapa and Malla received Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively.
Boxer Manandhar defeated
Nepali boxer Sudesh Manandhar on Monday was defeated by Cuban Ramirez Arrazana Robeisy Eloy at the AIBA World Boxing Championship being held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In the 52 kg weight category bout, which is also the qualifying match for the London Olympics 2012, Manandhar was defeated on the basis of RSC.[break]
According to Rajiv Shrestha, the general secretary of Nepal Boxing Association, the referee stopped the contest in the second round after Manandhar was 9-0 down in the first round.
Another boxer Deepak Maharjan, bronze medalist of the 16th Asian Games, has already crashed out from the first round of the championship.
Nepali boxers will now have to achieve success in the Asian Qualifiers to be held in May 2012 to qualify for the next round.
Mulpani A lifts football title
Mulpani A lifted the title of Jay Nepal Cup Football Tournament organized by the Nepali Congress Region No 2 Kathmandu, on Sunday.
Mulpani A defeated Sun Tol 4-2 in tie breaker at the Manahora ground, Mulpani, after the regular time ended in a goalless draw.
Pramod Thapa, goalkeeper of Mulpani, saved two penalty shots. Thapa was later adjudged the man-of-the-match and also the best goalkeeper of the tournament.
Suraj Thapa of Sun Tol was declared the best defender while Mohan Thapa of Ward No 9 received the award for the best midfielder.
Anil Thapa of Mulpani A received the award for highest goal scorer of the tournament with three goals. Dachhi B team received the fair play award.
