KATHMANDU, May 3: A Law Asia Conference scheduled to be held in Kathmandu has been postponed for the second time due to the threats posed by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Saroj Krishna Ghimire, the in-charge of the conference, said the historical event scheduled to be held in the capital on July 4 and 5 has been postponed for the second time.

The Supreme Court Bar Association was organising the conference in association with Nepal Bar Association and LAWASIA. The conference namely the second LAWASIA Human Rights Conference was postponed after India earlier decided to cancel the event due to the global spread of COVID-19," said Ghimire, who is also the treasurer of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Ghimire said the conference originally scheduled for March 7-8 was postponed two weeks ago. Although a new date was set for July 4-5, 2020, the organizing committee decided to postpone it again as it is still not possible to organize the event due to the continued threat posed by the COVID-19.

Ghimire said they took the decision after making an assessment of the impact caused by the deadly virus globally and possible travel ban and necessity of maintaining distance for another several months.

"There is no guarantee of the safety of national and international delegates participating in the event. The rescheduled dates for July 4 and 5, 2020 also appear unrealistic as the situation of COVID-19 has not witnessed much improvement," Ghimire said. "This made us take the decision to cancel the conference for the year 2020."
