Landslide forces Chepang families to abandon home

SHAKTIKHOR, Chitwan, August 1: Residents of the Chepang Village in Shaktikhor area of Chitwan district have been forced to abandon their settlements due to landslides Wednesday night.

A girl from Siddhi VDC-7 of the district lost her life, while another person is said to have sustained injuries in the landslide. Similarly, flood swept away another local of the same village Sukra Bahadur Chepang, 27, according to Dhankumar Khadka, Kaule health post's incharge.After the landslide struck Naibandi Hill of Shaktikhor-3, fifteen families have been displaced from that area. "Our land was swept way," said a local Dil Bahadur Chepang.

"There might be more landslides as it has been raining all day," said Harimaya Chepang, "We can't go back to our homes?"

Sixty-one people from nine families have been left without a roof over their heads and food on their plates, as they are stranded in the town of Shaktikhor.

They have demanded that the authorities relocate them to a safer place. Because of the flood in Shaktikhor's Kayar River, more than half a dozen homes in the nearby areas have come under threat.

After surveying the landslide and flood-affected area, Chief District Officer Binod Prakash Singh and Local Development Officer Bharatmani Pandey have issues instructions for the relocate the displaced to Jutpani and Shaktikhor.

Dozens of pubs and restaurant in the tourist hub of Sauraha have also been washed away by the recent flooding. According to a tourism entrepreneur, Shirlal Pariyar, floodwaters have entered the restaurants on the banks of Rapti River. According to the police, 13 cottages and 7 to 8 restaurants in Sauraha have been flooded.

Similarly, after the floodwaters is creating troubles for the locals of Ratnanagar's Shantichowk, Chitrasari and Ramailo Danda. Also two dozen homes in Padampur have become water logged.
