KATHMANDU, Sept 5: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started monitoring the sanitary landfill site in Banchare Danda, where the Kathmandu Valley's waste is managed, via Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras from its Kamaladi-based People’s Plaza office. The landfill site, where the waste is managed, is located at Bancharedanda, on the border of Nuwakot and Dhading districts.

As part of an institutional reform program, CCTV cameras have been installed to gather information and monitor activities at the landfill site. The system is designed to monitor vehicles and individuals entering the site, aiming to prevent unauthorized activities.

The footage from the cameras will be monitored from the office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the KMC, Pradip Pariyar. Additionally, the Environment Management Department will also have access to the footage.

"To strengthen institutional operations by increasing automated systems, state-of-the-art CCTV cameras have been installed at the landfill site,” CAO Pariyar said.

The cameras are positioned to cover the personnel engaged in site management, the office, the roads leading to the site, and the security booth. According to the head of the Environment Management Department, Sarita Rai, the site is monitored through nine cameras.

The recently installed cameras are Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. According to the head of the Information Technology Department, Anirudh Nepal, these cameras can also capture audio along with video and read and record not just digital but also handwritten number plates, including those written in the Dewanagari script.
