Kathmandu Dojang wins taekwondo

KATHMANDU, May 1: Kathmandu Dojang clinched the title of the First Open Youth Taekwondo Championship with four gold and four bronze medals at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium on Friday. Bijeshwori came second with two gold, four silver and two bronze medals. [break]



Ranjit Shrestha of Koteshwor was declared best player in men´s category and Rajina Karki in women´s category.



In men´s 57-65 kg category, Bijay Gurung of Chitwan defeated Bikesh Prajapati of Emily Academy in the final. In 53-57 kg, Ranjit Shrestha of Koteshwor earned gold beating Rajesh Ranjan Magar.



Suraj Karki of Kathmandu and Chandra Magar of Lalitpur secured top two spots in 49-53 kg. In 46-49 kg category, Bijay Lama of National Taekwondo Training Centre (NTTC) defeated Bikram Khadgi of Pasa Dojang for the gold. In 43-46 kg, Amit Chaudhary of Kathmandu earned gold defeating Pradip Ale Magar of Dhalku.



In 40-43 kg, Sulaman Karki of Jai House secured first position beating Deepesh Shakya of Bandeshpur.



In women´s 51-60 kg, Gyani Chunara of Bijeshwori Gyan Mandir bagged gold beating Laxmi Thapa. Sita Tamang of Dhalke edged Janaki Shrestha of Chitwan in the final of 47-51 kg.



In 44-47 kg, Rita Gurung of Kathmandu defeated Rita Gurung of Ripu Mardini on the basis of points for the gold. In 40-42 kg, Bina Lama of Nijgarh secured first spot defeating Sapana Lama of Bhaktapur in the final.



Likewise, in 38-40 kg, Sabi Basyal of Kathmandu beat Laxmi Karki of Bijeshwori Gyan Mandir in the final.



Altogether, 420 players including 160 female and 120 male from 13-16 age group participated in the four-day long tournament. The tournament was organized keeping in view with the Olympic Youth Games to be held in Singapore in 2010.
