Karki, Chaudhary set national records in women's 400m and javelin throw

KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Armed Police Force (APF) athletes Dil Maya Karki and Seema Kumari Chaudhary set national records on Monday in women’s 400m and women’s javelin throw respectively during the National Open Athletics Selection Meet at the Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwar.



Karki clocked 58.8 seconds to set a new national record in women’s 400m. Pramila Rijal of the same departmental team held the previous record of 59.2 seconds. Durga Devkota of Nepal Army Club (60.1 seconds) and Mana Mati Bista of Nepal Police Club (61.2 seconds) finished second and third. [break]



The 21-year-old from Surkhet credited the regular training and hard work of her coach Sushil Narsingh Rana for her first national record. Karki had won the 400m and 200m sprints in the 38th National Athletics Championship held six months ago. Her only international participation was in the Asian Athletics Championship held in Pune, India.



“I am very happy to set the first national record of my career. I had tried to set national records during previous national championships, but did not succeed. Today’s achievement will motivate me to work hard in future. Now I will prepare targeting at least a medal in the upcoming South Asian Games,” said Karki, a member of the Mission SAG athletics team.



Chaudhary broke the national record in women’s javelin throw. The 19-year-old from Baijapur, Banke threw 37.78m to surpass the previous record of 35.59m set by Sita Shahi of Army. Shahi threw 32.89m to take silver on Monday and Anju Daura of Army (31.41m) secured bronze.



“I was expecting good results in the championship and I am happy that I set a national record,” said Chaudhary. “As a player this is the biggest achievement for me. Now I will try to compete in shot put and discus throw as well from next year.”



Army’s Hari Kumar Rimal and Raj Kumar Bista secured gold and silver in the men’s 10,000m race. Rijal clocked 32 minutes 6.8 seconds and Bista clocked 32 minutes 6.9 seconds. Kiran Kumar Bista of APF (32 minutes 17.1 seconds) finished third.

Tilak Ram Tharu of Police completed the men’s 400m race in 50 seconds to take gold. Dashi Ram Chaudhary of Army (50.4 seconds) and Hari Lal Chaudhary (53.1 seconds) secured silver and bronze respectively.



Dilli Khatri of Army jumped 6.95m to win gold in men’s long jump. Khatri’s colleague Chabi Lal Chaudhary finished second and Ashish Chaudhary of Laliptur came third. Women’s long jump gold went to Keshari Chaudhary who jumped 5.32m to finish ahead of Krishna Chaudhary of Army and Shila Chaudhary of APF.

Dhirendra Chaudhary of Police secured first position in men’s 110m hurdles clocking 15.7 seconds. Bishesh Mahato and Yogendra Lama of Army finished second and third. Keshari Chaudhary of Police won the women’s 100m gold clocking 16.9 seconds, with Sabita Chaudhary of APF and Shantu Chaudhary of her team taking second and third positions.



Army players claimed the top three positions in men’s shot put. Rajendra Basnet threw 12.51m to finish ahead of Bam Bahadur Gurung and Narendra Jung Shah. Anju Dagaura of the same departmental team won the women’s shot put with a throw of 8.73m. Basanti Chaudhary and Nista Shahi of Police finished second and third.

Dhirendra Jung Shah of Army threw 55.1m to take gold in men’s javelin throw. Narendra Jung Shah of Police and Ishwar Shrestha of APF secured silver and bronze medals.
