Shahi sets new record in javelin throw

KATHMANDU, May 24: Sita Shahi of PLA Sports Club on Tuesday set a new national record in women´s javelin throw during the qualifying round of the upcoming Asian Athletics Championship to be held in Japan in July and the World Athletics Championship to be held in August.



In course of setting the new record, Shahi threw the javelin 35.59 meters and surpassed the previous record of Basanti Chaudhary of Nepal Police Club (NPC) who finished second Tuesday. [break]Earlier, Chaudhary had set a national record of 35.46 meters during the Fifth National Games held three years ago in the capital. Chaudhary threw 34.86 meters while Amrita Chaudhary of Armed Police Force (APF) finished third with 30.74 meters.



Dhirendra Jung Shah of Army threw 1.92 meters to clinch the top spot in men´s javelin throw. Narendra Jung Shah of NPC and Tara Bahadhur Karki of Army finished second and third with 55.57 meters and 45.98 meters respectively.



In the men´s 100 m race, Tilak Ram Tharu of NPC clocked 10:50 seconds to secure first position. Army´s Min Bahadur Chaudhary claimed the second spot with a timing of 11:00 seconds and Bali Ram Chaudhary finished third with 11:07 seconds.



In the women´s category, Chandra Kala Thapa of NPC completed the race in 12:50 seconds for the pole position, while Pramila Rijal Chaudhary of APF and Keshari Chaudhary of NPC secured second and third positions with timings of 12:90 seconds and 13:39 seconds respectively.



APF´s Surya Maya Rai clocked 4:51:36 minutes to win the women´s 1,500 m race. Brinda Shrestha of APF came second clocking 4:52:54 minutes and Rupa Khadka of Army finished third with a timing of 5:31:62 minutes. In the men´s event, Army´s Hari Kumar Rimal clocked 3:56:79 minutes to take first position, ahead of his colleague Kalyan Baniya who clocked 3:59:16 minutes. Laxman Malla of APF finished third with a timing of 4:04:68 minutes.



In men´s high jump, Bal Krishna Chaudhary of APF leaped 1.95 meters for the pole position while Surya Bahadur Khatri of Army (1.90 meters) took second position. In the women´s category, national record holder Keshari Chaudhary jumped 1.50 meters for first place. Barsha Bhattarai of NPC jumped 1.35 meters to finish second and Sita Hajam of PLA jumped 1.31 meters for third place.



In women´s 100 m hurdles, Santu Chaudhary of NPC clocked 19.35 seconds to finish in the first position, leaving behind Sunita Tamang of APF who clocked 19.55 seconds.
