KATHMANDU, Feb 11: Japan’s private healthcare sector is set to offer employment opportunities to 20,000 Nepalis.

Stakeholder companies in Nepal and Japan jointly organized a program in Kathmandu on Monday to announce that they will send 20,000 caregivers under the 'Nepal-Japan Service Exchange Program'.

Representatives of Japan's Zenkou Research Institute and Progressive Staff Service, and Nepal's Kathmandu University School of Medical Science, Sun and Company Pvt. Ltd. and Sandipani Group of Education signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect.

“Since Japan needs workers in the healthcare sector, this program has been brought into operation with the aim of creating employment opportunities in Japan by recruiting skilled Nepali manpower,” said Naresh Ojha, executive director of Sandipani Group of Companies. As per the MoU, Sandipani will be responsible for sending Nepalis to work in the healthcare sector in Japan.

According to the agreement, people aged between 18 and 45 years will be eligible for such employment in Japan. Studying nursing is not mandatory for Nepalis who want to work in the healthcare sector in Japan. Nepalis who have passed the basic Japanese language N-4 level language test and passed the prescribed skill test will be able to enter the caregiving sector in Japan.

“Those who pass the language test and skill test will be selected by a Japanese company through an interview,” said PSS Executive Director Chizo Masuda. Those selected in this way will be trained in Nepal itself about information technology and AI skills required for caregivers in Japan.

According to the MoU, the Nepali caregivers selected in this way will be employed in various locations in Japan by the Japanese company PSS Khaigo. The company representatives said during the program that individuals working as caregivers in Japan can earn up to 200,000 Japanese yen (around Rs 184,000) per month.

“The main objective of the program is not only to provide Nepali people with employment in Japan but also to produce skilled manpower by providing international-level health care training to Nepali youth,” Sandipani Executive Director Ojha said.

Those who go to Japan in this way will get employment opportunities for three to five years. After that, they will be encouraged to return to Nepal.

"Young people who have returned to Nepal after working as caregivers in Japan will be encouraged to establish caregiving centers in Nepal," said Ojha.

Sandipani Group of Companies has expressed confidence that the program will prove to be a milestone for the professional development of Nepali youth, international experience, and expansion of Nepal-Japan relations.
