KATHMANDU, July 13: Guru Purnima (Teacher's Day) is being observed across the country today.
The Day that falls on the full moon day in the month of Asar according to the lunar calendar is marked by paying respect and expressing gratitude to Gurus or teachers.
On the Day, people especially students pay respect to Gurus or teachers for imparting them teachings and education. They also offer garlands and delicacies to Gurus or teachers and receive blessings from them.

Senior people in terms of knowledge, experience and strength, mother, father, great grandmother, great grandfather, uncle, father-in-law and mother-in-law are also respected as teachers, according to the Hindu tradition.
The persons who remove the darkness of ignorance by the light of knowledge are termed Guru according to theology and the Day is most important in the oriental tradition, said Ishwori Paudel, Head Teacher of the Rajkiya Sanskrit Secondary School at Matihani in Mahottari.
People in Mithila are also observing the Day by organizing various programs.
