The gunmen stormed into Ahamad Miya´s house and snatched away his son Kharbud from his mother´s arms. Kharbud´s mother fought the abductors to save her son but to no avail. The abductors thrashed her before taking away Kharbud.[break]
According to Ramesh Bhattarai, Chief of District Police Office of Siraha, Ahamad is away from home as he works abroad. When the abductors stormed in there were nobody in the house except Ahamad´s wife and son. Police say those who know Ahamad´s family closely might have been involved in the abduction.
This is the seventh case of child abduction in the past three months in Siraha and Saptari districts. While the parents of the abducted children pay hefty ransom, the police have been mere onlookers in almost kidnapping incidents.
Sushant Singh, 15, was abducted on July 3 from Rajbiraj municipality. Another boy, Akash Singh, was kidnapped the other day. While locals freed Sushant, Akash´s family had to pay ransom. However, the police have not yet been able to track down the kidnappers.
On July 16, an armed group kidnapped Chalani Kumari Yadav, 13, from Khadakpur VDC in Saptari. Chalani´s family had her released by paying ransom after two days of abduction. On July 19, Dhanjit Pandit, 11, from Lalapati VDC, was abducted. Pandit´s parents also had to pay ransom.
On August 18, Gaurab Chaudhari, 4, was abducted. Gaurab´s father Jalendra said, "Police just feign searching for our abducted children. Had we not paid the ransom, we would never have freed our son."
Keshari Raj Ghimire, Chief of Sagarmatha Zonal Police Office, said that a dangerous trend of uneducated and jobless youths resorting to abducting children is growing in Tarai districts.
