The hackers’ group named Anonymous #opnep on its facebook page said that they were not going to take down NT server as it would cost millions of rupees to Nepal government but they were in control of everything.
Dilli Adhikari, spokesperson of Nepal Telecom, said, “Although we have not been able to fully determine whether our systems have indeed been hacked because of the public holiday, our technical team have been working to find if anything was wrong in the server.”
He informed that no serious damage seemed to have resulted from the alleged hacking till late Wednesday. “We will be able to identify if the hackers had indeed breached our systems by Thursday,” he said adding.
The hacker’s group has posted a photo consisting of some mobile phone numbers on its Facebook page and claimed to have been watching the NT’s “dark sides” closely, an apparent reference to corruption and malpractices. They have also stressed on not harming the data related to Nepali citizen.
An officer at the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police, requesting anonymity, said, “Nepali consumers are not aware about the security of their systems and negligent about the vulnerability test of their cyber security system.”
The hacking group has said that it was monitoring the low bandwidth being transferred through ADSL in name of broadband and expressed concerns about the low quality of service. The group has reportedly hacked many websites belonging to government agencies, political leaders and other institutions.
