Govt, Karnali struggle body sign deal

KATHMANDU, May 26: The government and the Karnali Autonomous Region Struggle Committee signed a seven-point agreement on Saturday.



As per the agreement, initiation would be taken from the government side in the Constituent Assembly to ensure the Karnali Special Autonomous Region while federalizing the country.[break]



Minister for Peace and Reconstruction and convenor of the Government Talks Team, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, and committee convenor and CA member Naresh Bhandari, Dhn Bahadur Budha, Mohan Baniya, Janma Dev Jaisi and Prakash Rokaya signed on the agreement on behalf the government and the committee, respectively.



Minister and convenor of the Government Talks team, Rayamajhi acknowledged that the Karnali region has been neglected so far by the state and said that the government was positive regarding declaring the region as autonomous region with special rights as compensation.



It is also stated in the agreement that initiatives would be taken for determining the electoral constituencies based on the population and geography both and for ensuring the representation from Karnali in all bodies and levels of the state governance and policy formulation as by the struggle committee.



During the talks Minister Rayamajhi also pledged to have decision taken from the Council of Ministers regarding constitution of a constitutional Karnali Commission as well as on allocating 20 percent of the national budget for the development of Karnali, according to Janmadev Jaisi, member of the struggle committee.
