Unveiling progress report of the first four months of the 2015/16 on Friday, the department said most of these firms are based in Kathmandu, Chitwan and Kailali. The department has filed cases against these firms in their respective District Administration Offices (DAOs).
“We filed cases against these firms after samples collected from these firms failed to meet standards prescribed in Food Act,” Purna Chandra Osti, spokesperson of DoFTQC, said, adding, “We will take action against these firms as per the existing laws.”
Most of these firms are involved in production of food commodities like bottled water, dairy products, sweet products, edible oil, noodles, confectionaries and soft drinks.
Similarly, the department has also filed a case against Bottlers Nepal and Varun Beverages for selling adulterated soft drinks. Lab test of samples conducted by the department confirmed that Fanta of Bottlers Nepal, and Pepsi and Mirinda of Varun Beverages failed to meet standards prescribed in the Food Act.
Speaking at the program, Sanjeev Kumar Karn, director general of DoFTQC, said preparations were underway to bring Food Safety Act which will replaced Food Act, which, he said, is outdated. “We are trying to bring the new act in the current fiscal year itself,” Karn said, adding that the new act will focus on promoting food safety.
The department conducted lab test of 543 types of food products during the period.
